A report by New Philanthropy Capital warns that violence against women is costing British society £40bn a year, but charities which help victims are grossly underfunded. NPC's report concluded that the expense to public services, lost economic output and knock-on effects of violence against women in all its forms costs the country more than the annual defence budget. What's Going On?

This page provides general information about feminist events and activities in London. Some of these are organised by the London Feminist Network (LFN) or members of LFN. Some are links to events organised by others, but which may be of interest.

For the latest information, see our Events Calendar.

For reports and photos of some the past and ongoing activities and campaigns we've been involved with, see What We've Done.

How to get involved

For more information about how to find out more about the LFN events listed here and how to get involved, see our Join Us page.

LFN Monthly Meeting

We aim to meet once a month in central London, generally at 6.30 or 7.00 pm on the first Tuesday in the month.

These meetings are a good chance to meet other like-minded Feminist women and catch up on events and news. Meeting face-to-face creates a vital space to feel less alone and to rant and rave with women who don't think being a Feminist is anything to be ashamed of!

Debate, Discuss, Develop - a 3D Look at Feminism in London

On 11 October 2008 the LFN is hosting Feminism In London 08 - which will be a day of talks and workshops for women and pro-feminist men at Conway Hall, Holborn, Central London. The day will showcase the enthusiasm and energy of feminists in London and provide a forum for discussion and networking. More>>

Feminist Coalition Against Prostitution (FCAP)

Some members of the London Feminist Network are involved in this new group, which is urging the UK government to consider a Swedish style law to make buying sex illegal and to invest money in services to help women leave prostitution (such as housing, education and training, legal advice, welfare benefits and health care). We are calling for the decriminalisation of all women, children and men working in prostitution and demand that all criminal records for loitering and/or soliciting be wiped out so that survivors are not branded as "sex offenders" and barred from employment. Read about the launch >>

Feminist Book Group

The LFN feminist book group meets regularly, usually on the third Tuesday in the month. All meetings are held in central London from 7-9pm. See the Feminist Book Group page for dates and details of the books.

No More Porn on London Transport

Some LFN members have started a campaign to get porn banned on London Transport. If drinking alcohol is banned and notices exhort us not to eat smelly food or play music out loud, isn't it time that the reading of porn, including the Sun's page 3, etc., is banned? Porn encourages men to see women as sex objects and inferior to themselves. Porn therefore contributes to the epidemic of male violence against women. And porn leads women to internalise that perceived inferiority with sometimes tragic consequences. Seriously, reading porn on public transport is anti-social. More>>

Object Petition

Lap dancing clubs are currently licensed like cafes and karaoke bars. Consequently they are springing up all over the country  and local authorities have very little power to refuse them licenses. This is a disaster for women and girls. Sign the petition to get this changed!

Feminists Out Walking

Recently some LFN members met at Totteridge and Whetstone tube station on a Sunday morning and went for a nine-mile walk. We are thinking of going walking together regularly.

I Did Not Ask For It UK

Inspired by the women's dirty laundry project in India and the Clothesline Project in the USA, we are starting a "I Did Not Ask For It" campaign. We are asking women across the country to send in, or take a photo of, a garment of clothing you were wearing when you were sexually harassed or assaulted and with "I did not ask for it" painted or pinned across the garment. Anti-Porn London

This group formed in response to a growing sickness with the mainstreaming of pornography and the relentless creep of rape culture. We have been meeting regularly for over a year and have been exploring the effects of the sex industry and porn and planning ways of fighting back.

Our first campaign is a response to Playboy Enterprises opening a "concept" store in Oxford Street, London last September. We aim to draw attention to the fact that Playboy Enterprises, while marketing itself as a stylish 'retro' brand, is a porn company and draws its income from the exploitation and degradation of women and girls. We are raising awareness through monthly protests, a series of short films and lobbying.
